Getting air conditioning ready for spring
Check the filter, thermostat, outdoor airflow and condensate area before the first genuinely hot day.
Before cooling season, install the correct clean filter, clear loose debris around the outdoor unit, confirm the thermostat is set correctly and run the system on a mild day. Leave panels, wiring, refrigerant components and deep cleaning to a technician.
Give the outdoor unit room
With power off only as directed by the manufacturer, remove loose leaves and debris from around the unit. Do not push tools through the guard, bend coil fins or use a pressure washer. Keep plants and stored items from restricting airflow.
Check the indoor basics
Check the forced-air filter and confirm supply registers and returns are open. Look around the indoor unit and visible condensate drain for water. A wet area, recurring drain backup or water near electrical components needs attention.
Choose a sensible test day
Do not force an air conditioner to run in weather below the manufacturer’s permitted operating range. On an appropriately mild day, select COOL, lower the setpoint and give the system time to respond. Confirm airflow and listen for unusual operation.
When service is the next step
Call if the outdoor unit does not start, a breaker trips again, airflow is weak, ice forms, water appears where it should not, or the system runs without cooling. Do not open electrical compartments or handle refrigerant lines.
